HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING

Minutes of meeting held On April 2, 2008
Meeting opened at 10:15 a.m.

PRESENT: COA members: Frank Antonovitch, Harold Hewinson, Susan Sanders, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, John Reed and Brad Noble. Others: Senior Center Director: Margaret Crock, Outreach Worker: Deb Tierney, Maintenance Manager: Paul Gillis and Kitchen Manager: Don Sanders.

ABSENT: Sara Meier

Minutes of March 5, 2008 accepted.

REPORTS:
 
OUTREACH WORKER: Deb Tierney
In March we had Paul Leary from the Registry of M.V. who gave an interesting report on the changes in our physiology as we age. He passed out drivers’ manuals and was very well received. We have had four dozen applicants so far for fuel assistance and have sent out $6,200 in Butterworth funds at $200 per household. Distributed copies of the report from Laurie Cassidy on her visit. No corrective action was indicated. In April we will have a speaker to address Healthy Foods and Natural Supplements. We are working to get Danielle Rasys to entertain us here at the Center. I will need stamps on 4/28/08 for mailing of the news letter. In March, 21 unduplicated clients served and 114 service units provided. I will be attending several meetings in April. These are on April 1st, April 9th and April 16th.

FRIENDS OF THE HOLLAND SENIORS:
No report.  

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In March, 673 contacts made, 69 seniors served, 234 attended Senior Center, 150 attended congregate meals and the balance includes cards & games (45), exercise (36), senior tax work off program (32), Speaker from Registry of Motor Vehicles (21), No sew blankets (15), Movies (16) and other.

FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer  
 Receipts in March were: GSSSI $583.33. Expenditures in March were: telephone $56.81, M Crock salary $611.00, Deb Tierney wages $568.70, Electric $148.91, Trash pickup $28.73, Managers wages $475.00, Gas $631.20, Supplies $215.38, Dimmer switch and 2 GFI receptacles $300.00, Office chair & supplies $139.35. Brad will attend the Finance Committee meeting on April 3rd. Distributed estimate of spending for total FY 2008. Jack suggested looking into getting local sponsors for postage in mailing costs of news letter.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Margaret Crock, Deb Tierney & Olive Nixon
Usual activities include: games-cards, cribbage, scrabble, blood pressure clinic, and regular lunches on Mondays, the 2nd Wednesday (birthdays) and on the 4th Wednesday. Corinne Lavallee’s “no-sew blankets” for service men held on Thursdays at 11:15. An Arthritis Foundation exercise class is changed to Wednesday’s at 10:00 a.m.  Cribbage is held each Thursday at 12:30.  Computer classes for seniors are available upon request.  All computers are operational and may be used by seniors anytime the center is open. Blood pressure clinic is held on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 11:15 by Ms. Joan Dusoe, R.N. This is provided by Harrington Memorial Hospital’s Preventive Health Cardiovascular & Endocrine Wellness Screening Program. AVADA hearing tests changed to even months starting April 10th at 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. On April 17th the Intergenerational lunch at the Holland Elementary School with the 2nd graders will be held at 11:30. Movies are shown on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. On Tuesday’s from 11:00 a.m. to noon a craft class in making of hats and mittens for second graders is held. On May 1st the 5th graders will be providing and serving lunch at the Senior Center. They will be speaking on Environmental issues and will have a plant for the Center. We will be giving them 25 watermelon plants to grow in their gardens.

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock and Harold Hewinson.
Year to date, $2,453.38 has been charged to the Senior Center, $1,849.50 to the School, $490.00 to the Tax office, $318.50 to the Assessors office and $144.00 to the Town Clerk.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE:  Paul Gillis
Motion made, seconded and approved to have Osterman do a one time maintenance job on our system. Motion made, seconded and approved to purchase fertilizer not to exceed $100.00. Still investigating the fire extinguisher for the kitchen.  
 
KITCHEN MAINTENANCE: Don Sanders
Will contact Cormier exterminating service to do foundation spraying.  Brad will continue checking with Health Dept. regarding our Retail Food Establishment Certificate of Registration. Brad will report to GSSSI our disappointment on the new place setting package on 4/22/08.
                 
All of the above reports were accepted by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS
Paul reported that all chairs on the first floor have been fixed to avoid marking the floors.

NEW BUSINESS
 Mrs. Cheryl Crouse from the Holland Congregational Church spoke about the dinner they are holding tonight at the Senior Center. They will be providing all the food and table needs. Don and Paul will be on hand to assist. Motion made, seconded and approved for this event. Application for use was signed. John Reed requested permission to have Holland Rod & Gun Club events included in our news letter, approved. He also suggested that we get together with the Rod & Gun Club and the Lake Association to discuss ways to get new members. Paul will investigate getting a meal for this meeting. A Sub-committee was established to interview applicant for the Senior Aid position. Members are, Frank Antonovitch, Margaret Crock and Susan Sanders. They will report their recommendation to the COA.
